How to Compare Funded and Personal Trading Accounts

Many traders run a prop firm account and a personal account at the same time. Comparing them looks easy: put the profits side by side. In practice, raw profit is the least useful number, because the two accounts differ in size, rules, costs and pressure. This guide shows how to compare them fairly.

Why raw profit misleads

  • Different sizes. $1,000 on a $100,000 funded account is 1%. On a $5,000 personal account it is 20%.
  • Different rules. A funded account's loss limits stop your worst days. A personal account has no such floor unless you set one.
  • Different costs. Prop firms charge a fee and keep part of the profit. A broker charges spreads, commissions and swaps on every trade.
  • Different pressure. Many traders take fewer risks on their own money, or more risks on an account where the most they can lose is a fee.

The metrics that compare well

  • Expectancy in R. The average result per trade measured in units of risk. It ignores account size, so it is the fairest single number. See what expectancy is and use the expectancy calculator.
  • Win rate and average R. Together they show whether the edge comes from accuracy or from letting winners run. See what an R-multiple is.
  • Maximum drawdown as a percentage. How deep the worst run went, relative to each account's balance.
  • Rule breaks. Count trades taken outside your plan on each account. A gap here usually explains a gap in results.

A simple monthly review

  1. Pull the same date range for both accounts.
  2. Compare expectancy in R, win rate, average R and maximum drawdown.
  3. Check risk per trade: was it the same percentage on both?
  4. List rule breaks on each account and note what triggered them.
  5. Decide one change for the account that lagged, and review it next month.

Tracking both in one place

Comparisons only work if both accounts are logged the same way. Clarity Tracking syncs prop firm and broker accounts from MT5, TradeLocker, cTrader, Match Trader and more into one dashboard, so the metrics are calculated identically for each. The Starter plan covers up to 3 accounts, and Professional is unlimited; see pricing.

If you trade TradeLocker on both sides, two of our independent partners run on it: Clarity Traders for simulated funded accounts, and Clarity FX for live forex and crypto trading. Both are separate companies with their own terms.

FAQ

Should my personal account perform the same as my funded account?

Not exactly, but expectancy in R should be in the same range if you trade the same strategy. A large gap usually points to different risk or more rule breaks on one account.

How many trades do I need for a fair comparison?

Aim for at least 30 to 50 trades on each account before drawing conclusions.
