Calculate the margin required to open a forex or CFD position at your broker's leverage.
Margin is the deposit your broker sets aside to keep a leveraged position open. It depends on the position's value and your leverage:
Our independent partner Clarity FX also has a forex margin calculator for TradeLocker traders.
Required margin = Position value ÷ Leverage
One standard lot of EUR/USD at 1.0850 is worth $108,500. At 1:30 leverage the margin is $108,500 ÷ 30 = $3,616.67. At 1:100 it is $1,085.
Margin tells you how much capital a position ties up, not how much you can lose. Your risk is set by your stop loss and position size. Use the position size calculator to set risk, then check margin here to make sure the trade fits your account.
Regulators in many regions cap retail leverage, for example at 1:30 on major forex pairs in the UK and EU, with lower limits on other assets. Prop firms set their own leverage per account. Check yours before you trade.
If losses reduce your equity below your broker's margin requirement, positions can be closed automatically. Keeping risk per trade small and tracking open exposure in Clarity Tracking helps you stay well clear.
